Biography

In the late 1970s and early 1980s Yury Prisekin competed as a swimmer for the Soviet national team. Prisekin earned a place on the Soviet Olympic team after winning gold in the 4 x 200 metres freestyle relay at the 1979 Swim Europe Cup in London. At the 1980 Moskva Games he swam in the 4 × 200 metres freestyle relay, with the team winning gold. As Prisekin only swam in the heats, however, he was not awarded with a medal. Despite this, he then won gold in the 4 × 200 metres freestyle relay and silver in the 4 × 100 metres freestyle relay a year later at the Summer Universiade. From 1984 to 1990 Prisekin was the head of the Olympic Training Centre at the SKA swimming pool in the city of Samara, where he also served as city’s deputy mayor and head of the fuel and energy department, in addition to running in the local mayoral elections.
