Ukrainian Vladimir Raskatov’s best year was 1976, when he won his only Soviet title in the 400 freestyle and was selected for the Soviet 1976 Olympic team, where he surprised the world by winning his 400 freestyle heat with a new Olympic record, later winning a bronze in the 400 metre final. He also won silver as a member of the Soviet 4x200 free relay team. In 1977, Raskatov won gold as a member of the Soviet 4x200 freestyle relay team at the European Championships, but was not as successful individually, reaching only the semifinals of the 400 freestyle. Domestically, besides his 1976 title, Raskatov won three silvers (1977 in 400 free and 1976 and 1978 in the 4x200 relay) and three bronzes (1977 in 200 free, 1978 in 400 free, and 1979 in the 4x200 free relay) at the Soviet championships. He later worked as a swimming coach in Moldova.
