In 1965 Shuvalov won three silver medals in relay events at the Summer Universiade in Budapest. One year later he was part of the team that won the gold medal in the 4 × 100 metres medley relay at the European Aquatics Championships in Utrecht, although Shuvalov only swam in the heats.
