Judy Cornell swam the 200 breaststroke at the 1952 Olympics, but did not get past the first round. She was second at the US Olympic Trials. Cornell swam for the Portland Jaycees in 1952. She set US long-course records in the 100 breaststroke in 1950 and 1951.
She met Daniel DeRego while on a vacation in Hawai’i and they later married. DeRego was a lifeguard on Waikiki Beach and a top surfer. Shortly after their wedding, he went to Australia where he competed in a surfing competition held at the same time as the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. The couple later settled near Portland, Oregon, where they both coached swimming at the local YMCA and YWCA. Cornell was inducted in 2001 into the Portland Interscholastic League Hall of Fame.
