At the 1948 Olympics, Marie Corridon, of the Women’s Swimming Association of New York, was eliminated in the semi-finals of the individual 100m freestyle. She won two AAU titles in the 1948 and 1950 short-course 100y freestyle. She learned to swim at The Longshore Club in Westport, Connecticut when she was only five. She later attended St. Joseph’s Parochial School in South Norwalk, Connecticut; Sacred Heart Academy in Stamford, Connecticut; and Marymount College in New York. Corridon became Mrs. William Mortell and the mother of seven children. Five girls were competitive swimmers and, in 1983, two competed at the NCAA Div. I Championships and one competed at the NCAA Div. II Championships. She worked for a time as an assistant to USOC and IOC President Avery Brundage, and then as an executive secretary at the Walter Reed Army Hospital. Later returning to her native Norwalk, Corridon worked in public relations at the Norwalk Hospital.
