Susan Doerr was only 15-years-old when she made the 1960 Olympic team. She competed in her first AAU meet in 1959, representing Vesper Boat Club. Doerr set a world record in the 100 metre butterfly in August 1961, recording 1:08.2 in Philadelphia. She placed second in the 100 fly at the 1960 AAU outdoor meet. Doerr graduated from Abington Friends School in Abington, Pennsylvania in 1963, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1967.
