László Novakovszky began his sports career in 1942 as a basketball player for BBTE. After the Second World War Novakovszky continued with Bp. Kinizsi TE, and then from 1947 with KASE. He won the Hungarian championship title with Kinizsi in 1946 and played 33 times for the Hungarian national team between 1947 and 1951. He played a prominent role in the Hungarian national team qualifying for the 1948 Olympics, the key to which was the defeat of the Bulgarians in Sofia (54-26) at the Balkan Games. At the Olympic tournament, the Hungarian team defeated Italy, Canada, and host nation Great Britain, but lost in overtime to Uruguay and group winners Brazil, thus failing to advance to the top eight. The Hungarian leadership did not allow the team to play for the 9th–16th places, so due to the lack of matches, the team was automatically ranked 16th. He was also a member of the Hungarian team that finished third at the 1949 World College Championship in Budapest.
After the 1956 revolution Novakovszky left Hungary and settled in Brazil. He kept so much contact with the sport that he refereed matches.
