Tammy Hazleton was only 16-years-old when she swam the 200 metre breaststroke at the 1964 Olympics. She was a high school student at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland, and swam for the Northern Virginia Aquatic Club. Hazleton later married, becoming Tammy Murphy, and became a swim coach.
