Jenny Kemp was a backstroker until 1971, when she told her coach she was simply bored with backstroke training and wished to try something else. The something else was freestyle and earned her a berth on the Olympic team. After being eliminated in the semi-finals of the individual 100m freestyle at the 1972 Olympics, Kemp won a gold medal and a share of a new world record in the freestyle relay Swimming for the Cincinnati Pepsi Marlins, she won her only AAU title in 1972 in the 100m free.
