After finishing second to Peggy Rawls in the 100m freestyle at the U.S. Final Trials, Bernice Lapp reached the semi-finals at the Berlin Olympics. Although she finished fourth, she failed to make the final because her time was inferior to that of the fourth-place swimmer in the other semi-final. Lapp competed for the Newark Women’s AC. She attended the Penn Hall School in Pennsylvania and later New York University. She and her husband settled in South Plainfield, New Jersey in 1950 where she became a homemaker and raised two daughters.
