In July and August 1964, Marilyn Ramenofsky broke the 400m freestyle world record three times, but failed in her bid for the Olympic title. At Tokyo, the favored Ramenofsky lost to her teammate, Ginny Duenkel, but her world record remained intact. Marilyn Ramenofsky attended Pomona College, where she trained with the men’s swim team because there was no team for women. After college she earned a Ph.D. from the University of Washington in the field of ecology and ethnology. She married, becoming Mrs. Wingfield, and then did post-doctoral study on the behavior of birds.
