After finishing second in the 100m butterfly at the 1960 U.S. Trials, Carolyn Schuler of the Berkeley YMCA competed in the individual event and swam the butterfly leg on the medley relay team at Rome. The winner of the butterfly in the U.S. Trials was Carolyn Wood, but Wood failed to finish at the Olympics when she swallowed water at the turn. This eliminated Schuler’s main competition and she won rather easily. Her relay gold medal also brought her a share of a new world record.
