Biography

As Idella Thrasher, Della Sehorn started swimming with the Columbia Athletic Club in Portland, Oregon. After World War II, she married her coach, Al Sehorn, and soon became one of the top American breaststrokers. She competed in the 200 m breaststroke at the 1952 Olympics, and later that year was given the Bill Hayward Award as Oregon’s top amateur athlete. Sehorn retired from competition in 1953 to raise three children and also coached swimming in Portland and later Los Altos, California. In the 1970s she returned to the pool competing in masters swimming. Sehorn was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 1991.
