The University of Virginia’s Wendy Weinberg’s first international success came at the 1973 Maccabiah Games, where she won four gold and three silver medals. She then won the 800m free at the 1975 Pan-American Games before placing second to Shirley Babashoff in the same event at the 1976 Olympic Trials. At the Olympics she again finished behind Babashoff, but with the East German, Petra Thumer, beating both Americans, Weinberg took the bronze.
