Jim Gilhula swam the 400 freestyle at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, finishing seventh. He placed second in the event at the US Olympic Trials. Gilhula swam for the Detroit Athletic Club and Southern Cal. He was AAU Champion in the 100 freestyle in 1933 and the 200 freestyle in 1934-35. Gilhula helped his club set a world record in the 300 metre medley relay at the 1936 AAU meet. He later worked as a policeman.
