Bev “Barney” Barnes was a long time member of the Canadian national women’s basketball team in the 1970s, representing her country on home soil at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, finishing 6th. A graduate of the University of British Columbia where she played basketball, Barnes was a member of the 1972/1973 basketball team that won the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) Championships with a 24-1 record, and as a team, was inducted into the University of British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.
Barnes obtained her Master’s degree in Education, was a career high school teacher, eventually retiring as a vice-principal in 2009 in British Columbia. Born in Ottawa, Ontario, Barnes was an avid curler and golfer, who died suddenly from a massive thoracic aneurysm after a round of golf in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada.
