Charles Hutter swam in the heats of the 4x200 freestyle relay at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He had placed fifth in the 100 freestyle at the 1936 US Olympic Trials. Hutter attended Harvard, graduating in 1938. He was 1937 AAU Champion in the 200 freestyle indoors.
