Biography

Joel Thomas was a freestyle sprinter who swam internationally for the US from 1987-92. At the 1987 Universiade he won a 4x100 freestyle relay gold medal. Thomas won two medals at the 1991 Pan American Games, a gold in the medley relay and a silver in the 100 freestyle. He also won a gold medal in the 4x100 free at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, although he swam only in the heats. Thomas swam in college at U Cal Berkeley. He also played water polo at Berkeley, helping Cal win NCAA titles in 1987 and 1988. His greatest individual victory was likely at the 1988 US Open when he defeated Matt Biondi in the 100 freestyle.
