Ed Townsend attended Yale University graduating in 1966 with a degree in psychology. Townsend won four NCAA titles while at Yale, winning the 1963 400 yard individual medley, and swimming on winning Yale relay teams in 1963-65 in the 4x100 free relay. Townsend also competed for the Santa Clara Swim Club. He later attended law school at U Cal Berkeley and started a law practice in New York, Townsend Rabinowitz Pantaleoni & Valente, which specialized in entertainment law from 1980-96.
