Al Vande Weghe, of the Newark AC, set world records for the 100m and 200m backstroke. After winning his Olympic silver in Berlin he entered Princeton and, in 1938, became the first man to break one minute for the 100y backstroke. Vande Weghe won three consecutive NCAA titles and at the AAUs he won two indoor and one outdoor title. He made his career as a chemical engineer with the DuPont Co. for over 35 years.
