Although Matt Vogel placed only third at the 1976 Final Trials, he came through to win the 100m butterfly title in Montréal. However, he failed to dislodge Mark Spitz’s world record and this was the only event on the men’s swimming program at Montréal which failed to produce a new world record. Vogel is a graduate of the University of Tennessee.
