At the 1948 Summer Olympics, Yugoslavian swimmer Marjan Stipetić swam in the 400m and 1,500m freestyle events, but did not earn a medal. Two years later at the 1950 European Swimming Championships, however, he won a bronze medal with the Yugoslavian team in the 4x200m freestyle relay competition. During the early 1950s he played water polo with Italy’s Canottieri Napoli aquatic club and, with the team, won the Italian Championship in 1951. He later moved to Canada in the 1980s, changed the spelling of his first name to “Mariyan”, and began competing in national masters-level tournaments. In 2005 he won the Town of Markham, Ontario’s Silver Dolphin Award for his local contributions to aquatics, and he holds 42 records at their Masters Swim Club for events in various age categories from 55 through 79. He has held the Canadian record for the 1,500m freestyle event for the 70-74 age category since January 13, 2001.
