After a spell at Spartak Leningrad, Tatyana Gonobobleva (then still under her maiden name of Semyonova) switched to Burevestnik in 1969. While she never won the league title (runner-up in 1969 and 1970), her performances earned her selection for the Soviet national team, the dominant team internationally. After winning the European Championships in 1971, Gonobobleva also won 1972 Olympic gold, the Soviet team winning a close contest over Japan.
Two years later, at the World Championships, the Japanese emerged victorious, and Gonobobleva and the Soviet Union had to contend with second place. They won further titles at the 1973 World Cup and the 1970 and 1973 Universiad, after which Gonobobleva retired. She returned to Spartak to become a children’s volleyball coach.
