Biography

In the 1970s Russian volleyball player Aleksandr Saprykin won multiple medals at international competitions representing the Soviet Union. Saprykin was part of the Soviet side that won gold at the 1971 European Volleyball Championships in Italy. The following year he enjoyed Olympic success with a bronze medal at the 1972 München Games. This was followed by gold at the 1973 Summer Universiade in Moskva and silver at the 1974 World Volleyball Championships in Mexico.

After his playing career Saprykin became a coach for the USSR national team and worked as the director of a sports school in Kalinin. He continued to work in management roles in the sport including chairing the St. Petersburg Volleyball Federation, heading the North-Western Volleyball Association, and becoming the deputy director of the Zenit beach volleyball club.
