Hitter Vladimir Shkurikhin started playing volleyball with CSKA Moskva in 1975 and from 1976-78 was with SKA Rostov-na-Donu. From 1978-92, Shkurikhin played with Dynamo Moskva, before finishing his sporting career by playing for various Spanish clubs during the 1992 season. Shkurikhin never won a Soviet title, but as a member of Dynamo Moskva won 4 silvers (1984-85, 1988-89) and three bronzes (1980, 1983, 1986) at the Soviet championships. He also won bronze at the 1992 Russian championships. Shkurikhin also won at the CEV Cup Winners’ Cup with Dynamo Moskva in 1985.
Shkurikhin was on the Soviet national team from 1981-89. He won Olympic silver in 1988, was a World champion in 1982 and won silver at the 1986 World Championships. He was on the Soviet team when they won the World Cup in 1981, silver at the 1985 World Cup, and bronze in 1989. Shkurikhin also played at five European Championships, winning the tournament in 1981, 1983, 1985, and 1987 and finishing in disappointing fourth in 1989. Shkurikhin also won gold at the 1986 Goodwill Games and was with the Soviets when they won gold at the 1984 Friendships Games, a replacement tournament for Socialist countries that boycotted the 1984 Olympics.
After finishing his playing career, Shkurikhin worked as a volleyball coach. He was the coach of Dynamo Moskva, Dynamo Sochi, Lokomotiv Novosibirsk and with clubs in Saudi Arabia and Germany. From 2007-2013 Shkurikhin was the coach of both Moscow University men’s and women’s teams. From 2013 until his death, Shkurikhin worked as a physical education teacher with high school No. 1542 in Moscow.
