Mary Jo Peppler attended Sul Ross State University in Texas, where she was a six-time All-American. Peppler played for the US at the 1964 Olympics, helped the US win a gold medal at the 1967 Pan Americans, and played at the 1970 World Championships, where she was named the tournament’s most outstanding player. In 1975 she won ABC television’s inaugural Womens Superstar competition. Peppler later went into coaching, coaching at Utah State, Florida, Sul Ross State, and Kentucky. She also coached the E Pluribus Unum professional team of Houston, and was the player/coach for the El Paso Sol (1975) and Phoenix Heat (1976) of the International Volleyball Association as well as Major League Volleyball’s New York Liberties in 1987 and 1988. Peppler also mentored several prominent beach volleyball teams. She was given the US Volleyball Association’s All-Time Great Player Award in 1982 and in 1983, was inducted into the Women’s Sports Hall of Fame.
