John Henn graduated from San Diego State University in 1966. He played for the US at the 1966 World Championships, and helped them win gold at the 1967 Pan American Games. Henn was a US Volleyball Association (USVBA) All-American in 1966 and 1968.
After his playing career Henn returned as head coach of the San Diego State volleyball team, leading them to the 1973 NCAA title when they upset Long Beach State. The Aztecs had also been runner-up at the 1972 NCAAs. In 1974 Henn controversially put Laurel Brassey on the men’s team – she would later play for the USA at the 1988 Olympics.
Henn was relieved of his coaching duties in 1974 and settled briefly in Phoenix, where he worked as a recreation supervisor, but he returned to San Diego State as coach in 1985, staying in the role until 2000. He is a member of the Southern California Indoor Volleyball Hall of Fame and the San Diego Sports Association Hall of Fame.
