Guillermo Martínez Ginoris initially started his sporting career as a long distance runner and ran in regional marathon races in Spain. Upon his return to his native Cuba Ginoris became a swimmer with his local sports club. He was suspended for a year due to indiscipline but was later asked if he would return to the club as a water polo player. Throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s he was a mainstay on the Cuban national water polo team, competing at multiple international tournaments. At the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1966 and 1970 he was part of the team that won the gold medal, along with a silver at the 1971 Pan American Games. Ginoris represented Cuba at two Olympic Games, with the team finishing eighth in Mexico City in 1968 and ninth in München four years later. After his playing career he worked for FINA serving on their technical committee for the sport. His son Guillermo also played water polo for Cuba at the Olympics.
