Biography
A Scottish international goalkeeper with Motherwell Amateurs, Ian Johnson competed in two Olympics, 1948 and 1952, and was an ever-present in both tournaments. He also competed in the European Water Polo Championships at Vienna in 1950. Despite playing for Scotland regularly from just after World War II, he fell out of favour with the Great Britain selectors in favour of Londoner Arthur Grady after the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. However, following an excellent tournament at Moskva in 1957, Johnson was recalled to the side in 1958 and appeared for them again the following year at the age of 34. He played 13 times for Scotland in the Home International Championship (against England, Ireland and Wales), between 1948-59. His club side Motherwell were 12-times Scottish champions 1947-58 and won the ASA national title in 1949 and 1950.
