Rainer Hoppe won three bronze medals with the West German water polo team in international tournaments. He won them at the 1982 World Championships, 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, and 1985 European Championships. He was also a World Cup winner in 1985.
Domestically, Hoppe played from 1979-98 with Duisburg 98, SC Aegir Uerdingen, Dolphin Wuppertal and Düsseldorfer SC 1898. In 1986, 1988, and 1990 he was the Bundesliga’s top scorer. In total, he scored 1324 goals and remained the Bundesliga’s all-time top scorer as of 2020. In 1997, Hoppe finished his sports studies, graduating as a sports teacher and water polo coach. He then worked with different Bundesliga clubs.
