German water polo player Dirk Klingenberg was on the squad eliminated in the group stage at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. The previous year he won the bronze medal at the European Championships. In total, he won 190 international caps.
Domestically, Klingenberg played with ASC Duisburg (until 1980), SV Darmstadt 98 (1981-91), Wasserfreunde Spandau 04 (1991-99), and finally Düsseldorfer SC (1999-2002). He helped Spandau win seven national titles (1992, 1994-99), and six German Cups (1992, 1994-97, 1999). He was also Bundesliga top scorer in 1996 and 1998.
Klingenberg studied sports marketing and worked with Deutsche Telekom from 1999-2008 in the sports marketing department. He was involved in the sponsoring of the Football World Championships 2006, the Tour de France, and with football club FC Bayern München. In 2009, he founded his own sports marketing agency.
