Biography

András Katona began training with the Ferencváros swimming team from 1953, after which he transferred to train with the BVSC water polo team six months later. He was a player for BVSC between 1954 and 1972, and his greatest success with the club was a Hungarian Championship in 1966.

Between 1958 and 1962, Katona played 32 times for the Hungarian national team, with which he won the European Championship in Budapest in 1958 and in Leipzig in 1962. He was a member of the bronze medal team at the 1960 Roma Olympics.

Katona graduated first from the Budapest University of Technology and then from the Marx Károly University of Economics. Between 1957-70 he competed at five college world championships and Universiades, where he won two golds, a silver, and a bronze medal in water polo, and one second- and one third-place in swimming.

Between 1972 and 1973 Katona played water polo for Vasas and then retired from active sports. In 1964 he obtained a coaching certificate and worked as a coach for BVSC, Vasas and OSC. As a sports manager, he was the department president at his former club, the BVSC, in the 1980s.

After his sports career, he was a railway engineer, a chief group leader at the ministry, and in the 1990s, the director general of the Museum of Transport. He shared his water polo knowledge with the younger generation and his technical knowledge with future scientific experts at the department, He was a lecturer at the Technical University, head of department at the Győr College of Transport and Telecommunications, and became an honorary associate professor. He received his doctorate from Technical University in 1997. In addition to several recognitions, he also received the Eötvös Loránd Prize.
