The captain of the Clontarf water polo team, Stewart Barrett made his debut for the Irish Free State (now the Republic of Ireland) in 1921. Along with Clontarf team-mate Jimmy Brady, Barrett was in the Irish squad at the 1924 Paris Olympics. The pair were also in the squad that won gold at the inaugural Tailteann Games at Dublin shortly after the Olympics. Barrett and Clontarf rounded off the 1924 season by reaching the Leinster Cup Final, only to lose to Dublin. Barrett took part in trials for the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, but never gained selection for the final squad.
Barrett was also a well-known rugby player.
