Ercole Boero’s water polo career was spent with the Genoa Cricket and Football Club and he was a member of the Genoa side that won the first Italian water polo title in 1912. He went to the 1920 Olympics with the national side, but it was a disaster. Played in icy waters, the Italian side had just three players (Boero, his brother Mario and Amilcare Beretta) in the water at one time in the match against Spain. The others staying out of the water for fear of getting frostbite. The match was tied at 1-1 but Italy did not complete the overtime period and forfeited the match.
