Genova-born Roberto Gandolfi was an Italian water polo goalkeeper. His father Renato (1927-2011) was also a goalkeeper, but on the football field, and was a reserve keeper at the great Torino FC just after World War II. He was fortunate not to be aboard the tragic Superga plane crash of 1949, which wiped out the entire team.
Unlike their father Roberto Gandolfi and his brothers preferred water polo to football. After winning everything with the Sportiva Nervi youth team, alongside the future Italian captain Gianni Fossati, Gandolfi joined Bogliasco in 1978 and spent eight seasons with them. He also played for the Italian national team and took part in the 1982 World Championships at Guayaquil and also the 1984 Olympics.
After ending his water polo career, Gandolfi lived at Búzios in Brazil, where he opened a restaurant called Halloween. His brother Renato opened one of the same name in the marina at Nervi.
