Franco Lavoratori was a member of Pro Recco, the side that dominated water polo in Italy throughout his career. In 16 seasons between 1959 and 1974, the club took 14 Italian titles (all with Lavoratori), adding one domestic cup (1974) and the European Cup of 1965. As the best team in Italy, Pro Recco supplied four members to the Italian Olympic team of 1960, including Lavoratori. Before a home crowd, the Italians gained the gold medal. It was the only international prize for Lavoratori, who was also on three more Olympic teams through 1972.
