During the late 1960s and early 1970s Ricardo Chapa was one of the best water polo players in Mexico. In 1970 Chapa won silver at the Central American and Caribbean Games after Mexico lost to Cuba in the final. Two years later he was part of the team that competed at the 1972 München Olympics where he played in all five matches for Mexico. Chapa continued to play for another year, including representing Mexico at the 1973 World Aquatics Championships in Beograd, Yugoslavia.
