Gavril Nagy helped win five consecutive water polo national titles in Romania from 1952-56, captaining the national team from 1954-56. He also won Romanian championships in swimming and ice hockey. Nagy studied at the University of Southern California (USC) from 1957-59 where he played on the water polo team. After graduating from USC he became a motion picture producer and director.
