William Aucamp was a long-time member and captain of the South African water polo team and represented his country at two editions of the Summer Olympics. In 1952, the team lost its first qualification game against Belgium, won its second against Mexico, and came in third in its preliminary round, losing to Belgium and Spain but winning against Brazil. Aucamp was the goalkeeper for all five matches. In 1960 the squad came third in its preliminary pool after defeating Australia, tying the Netherlands, and losing against Yugoslavia. Aucamp was again the goalie in all of the games. He was also a national team member in 1956, but South Africa failed to qualify for the Games that year. Aucamp played football for Marists Brothers College in the Transvaal League and was also involved in rugby, cricket, and track and field athletics.
