Steve Barnett made his Olympic début in 1968 when the United States finished in fifth place. In 1972 he again played as goalkeeper and had an outstanding tournament as the Americans won their first Olympic water polo medals since 1932. Barnett also won a gold medal at the 1967 and 1971 Pan American Games. He graduated from Long Beach State in 1965 with a degree in physical education and later became a teacher.
