Sam Kooistra was the younger brother of William Kooistra, who competed with him on the 1956 USA Olympic water polo team. Three years later they won together the gold medal at the 1959 Pan American Games. Sam Kooistra swam for the Illinois Athletic Club. He later became a fire chief, and was district chief of the Chicago Fire Department. He also competed in masters’ swimming into his 60s.
