Ned McIlroy started playing water polo at El Segundo High School and represented the El Segundo Swim Club. He won a silver medal in water polo at the 1963 Pan American Games. McIlroy competed alongside his brother, Chick McIlroy, at the 1964 Olympics. A third brother, Paul, also made the team but did not get to play. Ned McIlroy was a longtime LA County lifeguard. After retiring from that job he became an insurance salesman.
