Austrian weightlifter Fritz Hala (or Haller) placed sixth in the light-heavyweight class at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The next year he won the World Championships and in 1938 was world runner-up. Haller set three world records; two in light-heavyweight snatch, and one in the light-heavyweight total. In 1934, he was European champion.
In his youth, Hala started with gymnastics and football before he moved to weightlifting. He was one of the few Austrian sportspeople competing again after World War II at the 1948 London Olympics, but he could only finish 14th.
