Lorenzo Alocén

Lorenzo Alocén played basketball for Spain at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. He played 15 years in the top Spanish league, leading the league in scoring in 1964/65. He was twice league champion with Real Madrid, and twice won the Spanish Cup, once with Real Madrid and once with Picadero Jockey. Alocén earned 69 international caps. During his career he also played for Helios in Aragon and Círculo Catholic in Badalona.

On 18 January 1962 Alocén caused a change in FIBA rules. His Real Madrid team was facing Ignis in Varese in the European Cup with the score tied at 80 with only two seconds remaining. Real Madrid had little chance in overtime as their top scorer had fouled out and two other starters were injured. Realizing that a big loss in overtime would hurt their points differential, their coach, Pedro Ferrándiz, instructed Alocén to score a basket in Ignis’s goal. Real Madrid lost by two but with minimal point differential. This led FIBA to punish voluntary self-baskets against with a fine and exclusion from the competition.
