Ze’ev Friedman was born in the Soviet Union but his family later settled in Poland. Friedman moved to Israel in 1960 and started competing in gymnastics but switched to weightlifting. He was a bronze medalist at the 1972 Asian Championships. Friedman competed in the 1972 München Olympics, finishing 12th in the bantamweight division.
On 5 September 1972 Friedman was among the Israeli athletes and coaches who were assaulted by Black September terrorists in their apartment at 33 Connollystraße in the Olympic Village. Friedman was killed by the terrorists early the next morning at Fürstenfeldbruck Air Base, along with 10 other Israelis.
