Biography

South Korean weightlifter Lee Hyeong-Geun first had success at the Asian Junior Championships, where he won silver in 1983 followed by gold in 1984 in the -75 kg class. Lee soon moved up from the junior ranks to win a hat-trick of gold medals at the Asian Championships (1985, 1987, 1989). His consistent performances earned him a place on the Olympic team for his home Games in Seoul in 1988 where he won bronze in the light-heavyweight class. Two years later he won silver in the middle-heavyweight class at the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing. After his retirement Lee was appointed as the head coach of the Koren weightlifting team in November 1996. He led the team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, with Sa Jae-Hyeok and Jang Mi-Ran both winning golds under his tutelage.
