Manuel Araneta was a Philippine basketball player known for his hang time. A reed-thin guard, he grew up in Bago City, Negros Occidental, where he began playing hoops. He then moved to Manila to enroll at Mapua, Far Eastern University, and joined the La Salle Univeristy team that became Philippine champions. Araneta earned a commerce degree at La Salle and later studied agriculture at University of the Philippines in Los Baños.
