Biography

Tun Maung was one of the best weightlifters and strongmen in Burma during the 1950s. Tun Maung competed as a featherweight at the first edition of the Asian Games in 1951, followed by the Helsinki Olympics the next year. In 1954 he won gold in the featherweight division at the Asian Games in Manila along with bronze at the World Weightlifting Championships in Wien (Vienna). After switching to the lightweight category he won another bronze at the World Championships in 1955, before finishing eighth at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and fourth at the 1958 Asian Games. Tun Maung competed at his final Olympics at the 1960 Roma Games where he was joint-second after the military press phase, but failed to record a valid lift in the snatch.
