Moldovian Tudor Casapu rose to the Soviet national team in 1987 after winning the lightweight silver at the 1986 Soviet championships, and then moved to the middleweight class. Casapu was the Soviet middleweight champion three times in a row from 1988-90 and took bronze in 1991. He also won the Soviet middleweight cup in 1987. Internationally, in addition to his 1992 Olympic gold, Casapu was also World middleweight champion in 1990, taking bronze in 1991. He also won bronze at the 1991 European Championships. After finishing his sporting career in 1999 Casapu worked as the president of Moldovan Weightlifting Federation.
