Because of the Soviet revolution of 1991, the Unified Team represented the Commonwealth of Independent States at the 1992 Olympics, in both Albertville and Barcelona. The acronym for the Unified Team was EUN, which stood for the French name for the team, Équipe Unifée.
At Albertville, the Unified Team was a loose confederation of five former Soviet republics – Russia, Belarus (formerly Byelorussia), Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan. At Barcelona, the Unified Team had representatives from all the former Soviet republics, save for the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, which competed independently.
In Barcelona, the Unified Team won 112 medals and 45 golds, while in Albertville they won 23 medals and nine golds. Its most successful athlete was gymnast Vitali Shcherba, from Belarus, who won six golds in the eight events in which he competed at Barcelona 1992. At Albertville, two athletes from this group won five medals: cross-country skiers Lyubov Yegorova (three golds) and Yelena Välbe (one gold).
